Wellness Week educates, unites women
11:26 PM 11/22/2007 — As the wind whipped through the trees Sunday morning at the Arboretum in Urbana, 103 women gathered at the starting line and waited for their cue to take off running.
The runners participated in the Women's Wellness Week 5K, the kickoff for a week of events planned by the Panhellenic Council to educate and unite women.

Police seeking person of interest in recent campus attacks
10:31 PM 11/5/2007 — The Champaign and University police departments are looking for a person of interest in two attacks that occurred on campus early Thursday morning, according to a press release from the Champaign Police Department.
Police are interested in talking to Fernando Rizo-Perez, a Hispanic male, 5'4" to 5'6" tall with an average build.

Bottled water banned from state budget
11:06 PM 11/4/2007 — Employees in Illinois state agencies are about to have something to talk about around the water cooler - until Nov. 16.
Following in the footsteps of municipalities and states across the country, Illinois' Department of Central Management Services has decided to ban state agencies from using state funds to purchase bottled water beginning on that date.

University places first in donor contest by registering most students in Illinois
12:03 AM 11/5/2007 — The University placed first in a statewide competition this past weekend, topping 19 other Illinois colleges and universities on its way to claiming the title.
This competition, though, had nothing to do with athletics, academics, or campus life.
This one was about organ donation.

Student committee asks UI to use energy-efficient bulbs
12:06 AM 11/5/2007 — After turning on a lamp in Grainger Engineering Library, Bryan Thompson, senior in LAS, got an idea.
Thompson, a member of the Illinois Student Senate's Committee on Student Life, noticed that the lamp was using an incandescent bulb and sent an e-mail asking the Grainger staff to replace its inefficient incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent and light-emitting diode lights.

Cornish, who works for the Lawrence Journal-World, left the University last December with both bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism. A few months later, he founded uofiwiki.

Greeks go 'green' in recycling competition
11:08 PM 11/4/2007 — Beginning Monday and ending Nov. 16, 23 Greek chapters will participate in the Green House Competition to determine which is the best recycling team on campus.
The competition, organized and sponsored by the student group Community Organized Recycling Efforts is the group's first project since it was founded at the beginning of this school year.

Archeologists carefully lifted the fragile mummy out of a quartz sarcophagus decorated with stone-carved protective goddesses, momentarily pulling aside a beige covering to reveal a leathery black body.

"I'm taking my hat off as a sign of respect for your strong identity in ethnicity, nation and race," said Preston Wiginton, 43, exposing his close-cropped head to a freezing drizzle.

8:40 PM 11/4/2007 — Champaign A 21-year-old Westville woman was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at the 600 block of Neil Street early Friday morning. According to a police report, the offender drove into a parking meter and was then found to be in possession of a controlled substance, driving on a revoked driver's license and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Odds and ends: Endangered snakes shipped to man, taken on city bus
8:36 PM 11/4/2007 — MUNCIE, Ind. - This time, the snakes weren't on a plane - they were on a bus. Now, a man who police say picked up a package of venomous baby timber rattlesnakes at the post office and took it home on a city bus is facing charges. Dustin A. Draper of Muncie faces preliminary charges of possession of an endangered species and transportation of a dangerous reptile without a permit.
