Champaign to raise property tax
11:06 PM 11/6/2007 — The Champaign City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to raise the 2007 property tax rate.
After some resistance from residents who spoke at the meeting, the Council agreed on a target rate of $1.2954 per $100 of equalized assessed valuation, nearly 3 cents higher than the 2006 rate.

Military: 2007 bloodiest year in Iraq for U.S.
3:40 AM 11/7/2007 — BAGHDAD - The U.S. military announced six new deaths Tuesday, making 2007 the bloodiest year for American troops in Iraq despite a recent decline in casualties and a sharp drop in roadside bombings that Washington links to Iran.
With nearly two months left in the year, the annual toll is now 853 - three more than the previous worst of 850 in 2004.

Deadly school shooting shocks Finland
1:30 PM 11/7/2007 — TUUSULA, Finland- An 18-year-old student opened fire in a Finnish high school Wednesday, killing seven students and the principal before turning the gun on himself, police said.
The teenager, who was not identified, shot himself in the head but survived and was taken to a hospital in "extremely critical condition," police spokesman Tero Haapala said.

Military aiming to ease standards for recruits with criminal records
11:24 PM 11/6/2007 — WASHINGTON - Faced with higher recruiting goals, the Pentagon is quietly looking for ways to make it easier for people with minor criminal records to join the military, The Associated Press has learned.
The review, in its early stages, comes as the number of Army recruits needing waivers for bad behavior - such as trying drugs, stealing, carrying weapons on school grounds and fighting - rose from 15 percent in 2006 to 18 percent this year.

Schools allowing freshmen to study abroad
11:30 PM 11/6/2007 — An increasing number of colleges are offering both first-year or first-semester study abroad programs for freshmen, according to a recent article published by Inside Higher Ed, an online news source.
However, the University is not one of them.
All students must be on campus at the University for at least two semesters before enrolling in a semesterlong abroad program, Erika Ryser, acting director of the Study Abroad Office, said.

11:13 PM 11/6/2007 — Champaign A 24-year-old woman reported criminal damage to property at the 1200 block of Northwood Street, Saturday night. According to a police report, an unknown offender entered the victim's garage, kicked and damaged the garage door and broke the front window of the house.
