Senate enacts water resources bill, overriding Bush veto
3:20 PM 11/8/2007 — WASHINGTON - President Bush suffered the first veto override of his seven-year-old presidency Thursday as the Senate enacted a $23 billion water resources bill despite his protest that it was filled with unnecessary projects.
The 79-14 vote included 34 Republicans who defied the president.

While researching her doctoral dissertation, Meredith Agle, a 2003 University alumna who works as a scientist at Rich Products, found some types of food-borne pathogens on vegetables cannot be killed by rinsing them under water.

Plane from Chicago searched at LaGuardia after bomb threat
1:07 PM 11/8/2007 — NEW YORK - An empty plane has been isolated at a section of LaGuardia Airport following a report of a bomb threat.
The Port Authority, which runs the airport, says American Airlines Flight 382 from Chicago landed safely and 117 passengers and five crew members were taken off the plane before the search began.

11:16 AM 11/8/2007 — A woman whose toddler son ingested a popular toy that contains a chemical that turns into a powerful "date rape" drug when eaten said Thursday she knew he was ill when he began to stumble, seemed drunk and started vomiting.
The mother, Shelby Esses, said her 20-month-old son Jacob, fell down and was limp after getting into his older sister's Aqua Dots, a Chinese-made toy recalled Wednesday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

University receives grant to ease transferring, recruit students
3:22 PM 11/8/2007 — The University recently received nearly $900,000 in grant funds to overhaul the transfer process and address challenges facing students in transition from community colleges.
Funding for the Transfer Experience and Advising Mentors project will come from the Lumina Foundation, an education research institute in Indianapolis.

Student senate discusses ways to lessen burden of expensive books
10:25 PM 11/7/2007 — The Illinois Student Senate discussed a resolution that would encourage professors to utilize the University library's e-reserves program at its Wednesday night meeting.
The e-reserves program provides free course materials for students. Not all class materials are part of the program though, and it contains mostly supplemental material.

According to a police report, the offender was stopped for passing a school bus while it was stopped in the street. The offender had no valid driver's license at the time of the stop.
