University police confirm second charge in assaults
1:23 AM 11/29/2007 — University Police Lt. Roy Acree confirmed Tuesday that Fernando Rizo-Perez was charged in connection with both Oct. 31 campus assaults, in addition to an assault in the city of Champaign.
"He was charged on four counts of aggravated battery," Acree said. "Three of which were in a public place, one for causing (severe) bodily harm.

Transportation funding bill fails in state House

But most Illinoisans don't live in Chicago, and some downstate representatives were critical of the proposal, which would have diverted $440 million in gas taxes collected from Cook County and its five bordering counties to bail out the transit system.

Champaign man shot during attempted armed robbery
10:22 PM 11/28/2007 — A 20-year-old Champaign man was shot through a closed door during an attempted armed robbery Tuesday night. Upon investigation, police discovered that another robbery had occurred in the same apartment complex, just moments earlier. The first victim was approached and robbed at gunpoint but left unharmed.

Rockford man pleads guilty to mall plot
10:19 PM 11/28/2007 — CHICAGO - A 23-year-old man who dreamed of waging violent jihad while under surveillance by the FBI pleaded guilty Wednesday to plotting a hand grenade attack on a Rockford mall crowded with Christmas shoppers.
Derrick Shareef, 23, a softspoken, bushy bearded young man apparently inspired by the violent acts of Mideast terrorists, faces 30 years to life when he is sentenced March 14, according to federal prosecutors.

8:27 PM 11/28/2007 — Champaign A 31-year-old woman reported residential burglary at the 1100 block of Eureka Street, Monday evening. According to a police report, an unknown offender entered the residence and took an Xbox game console and a game. Officers found no signs of forced entry and the residence was unoccupied earlier that afternoon.
