One last bang at Training Institute
1:28 PM 12/6/2007 — When a recruit declares "we're dead!" during a scenario, the instructors at the University's Police Training Institute get exasperated quickly. Last week, the senior class at the University's Police Training Institute listened to instructor, Ken Zimny, emphatically tell them that they were "never dead." After observing students during an armed domestic disturbance drill, Zimny made it clear that through each scenario, each drill and each real-life situation, officers must keep fighting to the end.

International student enrollment rebounds

She thought she wouldn't have trouble registering, but Gober forgot to check the restrictions on her preferred classes and could only enroll in three through the UI-Integrate system.

Fraternity travels to rebuild homes in Miss.
11:29 PM 12/5/2007 — From Dec. 17 to Dec. 22, 16 men from Delta Upsilon Fraternity will be embarking on a trip to Biloxi, Miss., to help rebuild residential houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. In conjunction with the Gulf Coast chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the 16 fraternity members will fund a 13-hour drive in their own cars to Mississippi just days after finals and return home just days before Christmas.

Tanker truck explosion releases river of burning fuel
11:54 PM 12/5/2007 — EVERETT, Mass. - Jolted from bed by a thunderous explosion, John Malone grabbed his pants and looked out the window to see a flaming river of fuel flowing toward his apartment from an overturned tanker truck. "I just grabbed my girlfriend and her aunt and ran," said the 28-year-old machinist.

Student senate sponsors Midwest Ally Conference
11:18 PM 12/5/2007 — The Illinois Student Senate, after extensive debate, passed an appropriation that will give a $1,000 sponsorship to the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference.
The appropriation originally failed at the Nov. 14 meeting because of concerns about conflicts with the bylaws.

Eight holiday shoppers left dead after shooting
11:47 PM 12/5/2007 — OMAHA, Neb. - A man opened fire with a rifle at a busy department store Wednesday, killing eight people before taking his own life in an attack that made holiday shoppers run screaming through a mall and barricade themselves in dressing rooms. Five more people were wounded, two critically.

Odds and ends: Officer sues to get job back after failing drug screening
9:02 PM 12/5/2007 — NEW YORK - A counterterrorism detective who says his failed drug test came because his wife had spiked his meatballs with marijuana has filed a lawsuit to get his job back. Anthony Chiofalo asked the court to declare that his firing in August from the New York Police Department was unreasonable and unconstitutional, to declare that a damning hair sample was improperly taken and to order his rehiring.

Police reports
9:08 PM 12/5/2007 — Champaign A 36-year-old woman, a 32-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man were arrested at the 1500 block of North Prospect Avenue, Monday night. According to a police report, the 57-year-old man was found to be driving with a suspended license and in possession of a controlled substance during a traffic stop.
