Lincoln Hall project in gear
11:03 PM 12/9/2007 — A long-awaited project for the University is set to begin next summer. Teachers, faculty and staff will move out of Lincoln Hall, 702 S. Wright St., with building renovations planned to begin fall 2008.
According to Linda Katehi, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, the project includes drastic changes on the inside of the building, as well as upgrading the building to make it more environmentally friendly.

Pastor protests war with trail mix
12:41 AM 12/10/2007 — Just minutes before snow began to fall Wednesday afternoon, two people in coats and gloves were handing out small bags of trail mix in front of the Community United Church of Christ, 805 S. Sixth St., Champaign.
The Rev. Mike Mulberry, the church's pastor, and Pat Syoen, a church member and Urbana resident, started distributing trail mix about three years ago as a way to protest the war in Iraq.

Last 3,000 Rose Bowl tickets sold Tuesday morning
4:39 PM 12/11/2007 — It didn't take long for the University of Illinois to sell the last of its Rose Bowl tickets - just half an hour.
The university put the last 3,000 of its tickets on sale at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. All were sold by 9:30.
Tuesday was the first chance the general public had to buy tickets from the university.

10:47 PM 12/9/2007 — "Batteries not included" labels on holiday toys may be a parent's worst nightmare this time of year, but for environmentalists the idea of hundreds of batteries being thrown away is even scarier.
"There is a better and higher use for (battery) materials," said Rod Fletcher, environmental manager for the city of Urbana.

State creates meth manufacturer database
10:27 PM 12/9/2007 — Due to a drastic rise in methamphetamine lab incidents in the past few years, Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a law declaring a database, known as the Methamphetamine Manufacturer Registry, in June 2006. This past June, the Illinois State Police launched a Web site designed to give communities throughout the state the opportunity to view the names of people convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine.

Oil spill devastates South Korea's west coast
11:05 PM 12/9/2007 — MALLIPO BEACH, South Korea - Thousands of people mobilized by South Korea's Coast Guard used shovels and buckets Sunday to clean up a disastrous oil spill polluting a swathe of the country's scenic and environmentally rich western coast.
About 100 ships, including Coast Guard, navy and private fishing boats, were also to help contain and clean up South Korea's worst spill, said Coast Guard official Kim Young-hwan.

NIU set to resume finals schedule after security threat
4:38 PM 12/11/2007 — DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University is closed Monday because of icy weather and a security concerns after police found threats scrawled on a bathroom wall over the weekend.
In a statement posted on the university's Web site, administrators say finals scheduled for Monday will be held on December 14th.

Champaign County aims for more voters at primaries
10:35 PM 12/9/2007 — When polls open for the Feb. 5 primary election, Champaign County Clerk Mark Sheldon hopes about one-third of voters cast a ballot - an improvement from the 2002 primary, when only one in four Champaign County voters took part in the election.
Educators, civil servants and political groups have expressed concern about disinterest in the upcoming primary, particularly among students.

Odds and ends: Postal carrier found with stolen greeting cards in car
8:39 PM 12/9/2007 — NEW YORK - Call it a special delivery. A postal carrier pocketed dozens of greeting cards he was supposed to deliver to get at the cash inside, postal inspectors said. He was found with more than 130 pieces of other people's mail in his car, according to a court complaint.

8:42 PM 12/9/2007 — Champaign Red Roof Inn, 212 W. Anthony Drive, reported aggravated discharge of a firearm Saturday morning. According to a police report, a 23-year-old offender fired shots into a vacant hotel room window. The offender damaged the window and the drywall of the room.
