Inside a crowded banquet hall in the Holmes Hall Student Center, attendees listened to students and public figures speak about the legacies of the victims and the importance of pulling together to move forward as one.

Chancellor Herman confirms shooter as UIUC student
3:49 PM 2/15/2008 — On Friday, Feb. 15 Chancellor Richard Herman at the University of Illinois sent a mass email to students confirming that the shooter at NIU was a graduate student at the University of Illinois.
Attached is a copy of that email.In the email, Chancellor Herman sent condolences to NIU and addressed the emotions of University students.

Gunman stayed at hotel near campus days before shooting spree
10:40 PM 2/16/2008 — DEKALB - Steven Kazmierczak checked into a hotel near Northern Illinois University three days before his deadly shooting spree at the campus, paying cash and signing in using only his first name, the hotel manager said Saturday. Kazmierczak was last seen at the Travelodge on Tuesday, hotel manager Jay Patel said.

In the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno and co-author Stephen Brusatte named one Kryptops palaios, or "old hidden face," because of a horny covering over its face.

And yet on Thursday, the 27-year-old Kazmierczak, armed with three handguns and a brand-new pump-action shotgun he had carried onto campus in a guitar case, stepped from behind a screen on the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a geology class.

Parmenter, 20, of Westchester, was described as a "gentle giant" by Maria Krull, an adviser at the NIU student newspaper. Parmenter was a sophomore studying finance and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity where "Dan was always helping other people out, giving you a ride to class, helping with homework, doing community service," said Eta Nu Chapter President Jason Garcia.

Local police respond to NIU shootings
4:25 PM 2/15/2008 — When DeKalb and Northern Illinois police responded to the shootings at Cole Hall on the campus located about 65 miles west of Chicago, police officers statewide were alerted soon after.
The University Police Department began looking into the incident to make sure it was isolated and that there was no threats on the University, said Interim Chief of Police Jeff Christensen.

House-approved bill addresses tuition, financial aid
3:42 PM 2/16/2008 — A bill to reauthorize and reform the Higher Education Act cleared the House of Representatives on Feb. 7.
The College Opportunity and Affordability Act would update federal guidelines on a range of issues, from financial aid to campus safety. The bill passed by a vote of 354-58, with all 19 representatives from Illinois voting in favor.

11:00 PM 2/15/2008 — CHICAGO - The 27-year-old man who fatally shot five students at Northern Illinois University before committing suicide used to cut himself and once lived at an inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation center in Chicago, a former employee said Friday.
Steven Kazmierczak spent more than a year at the Thresholds-Mary Hill House in Chicago, where his parents placed him after high school because he had become "unruly" at home, former house manager Louise Gbadamashi told The Associated Press.

10:26 PM 2/14/2008 — Champaign A 54-year-old man reported theft at Hobby Lobby, 2102 N. Neil St., Saturday afternoon. According to a police report, an unknown offender took the victim's backpack from a shopping cart. The backpack contained cash, an electronic dictionary and a passport from Turkey.
