Winter weather hits Champaign-Urbana
9:11 PM 2/24/2008 — A winter weather advisory was in effect until 6 p.m. yesterday for the Urbana-Chamapaign area. Up to two inches of snow and sleet were expected. Champaign's snow removal ordinance goes into effect 48 hours after the end of a snowfall. The ordinance requires property owners within the City's University District and Downtown Business District to remove snow from their sidewalks after at least two inches of snow accumulation or if there is ice, sleet or freezing rain.

University of Illinois student dead, cause unknown
7:14 PM 2/22/2008 — Rob Davis, a 21-year-old University of Illinois student, died Thursday after being hospitalized with a yet-to-be-identified infection, campus officials said Friday. Davis, a senior from Mokena majoring in biology, died at 8:49 p.m. Thursday at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, according to the Will County coroner's office.

University student contracted meningitis
3:01 PM 2/23/2008 — A female University student was hospialized on Wednesday with an infection later confirmed to be meningococcal meningitis, said Robert D. Palinkas, director of McKinley Health Center.
"At this point, we don't think there is any reason for alarm," Palinkas said in the press release.

Fraternity criticized for party
1:22 PM 2/23/2008 — Theme parties are nothing new to the Triangle Fraternity. The house hosts one every semester, but it was not until the most recent party on Feb. 2 that allegations of racism came into play.
While residents of the third and fourth floors chose 1970s and "Nightmare on Elm Street" themes respectively, students living on the second floor chose to model their space after the city of Compton, Calif.

Redistricting plan created, not approved by all
11:20 PM 2/21/2008 — Last week, the Champaign City Council chose the redistricting plan to be brought forward in an upcoming City Council meeting.
The new plan was designed to rebalance the districts, as the city acquired more than 7,500 new citizens since the last census. Due to this, some of the districts, most notably districts 3 and 5, became unbalanced with the rest.

Urbana to conduct special census
11:26 PM 2/21/2008 — The city of Urbana will be conducting an early special census this year for an updated population count. The new numbers will help Urbana qualify for additional state funding for its public schools, senior citizen programs, libraries, roads and transportation, which residents use daily.

Student homelessness on rise across Illinois, Champaign-Urbana
11:14 PM 2/21/2008 — The Illinois State Board of Education has reported that 60,000 homeless students live in the state of Illinois, which is significantly more than previously predicted.
The board recently began analyzing data that count the students who receive free lunches to better predict how many students are homeless across the state, said Peggy Dunn, Illinois state coordinator for homeless education.

All 46 aboard Venezuela plane killed in mountain crash
1:17 PM 2/23/2008 — CARACAS, Venezuela - All 46 people aboard a Venezuelan passenger plane died when it slammed into an Andean mountain, rescue crews confirmed Friday. "By the way it crashed we can determine there are no survivors," said Gen. Ramon Vinas, head of the civil aviation authority.

It is the first confirmed ground operation by the Turkish military into Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Odds and Ends: Scientists launch space flight with fish for research
9:52 PM 2/21/2008 — STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Seventy-two small fish were briefly launched into space by researchers Thursday, hoping their swimming patterns would shed some light on motion sickness. German researchers sent the cichlids on a 10-minute rocket ride that blasted off from a launch pad in northern Sweden, said Professor Reinhard Hilbig, who was in charge of the project.

Police report
9:50 PM 2/21/2008 — Champaign A 41-year-old man was arrested for drug possession at the 100 block of North Walnut Avenue early Tuesday morning. According to a police report, the operator of the vehicle was found to have drug equipment and cannabis. He was taken into custody for driving under a suspended license and having no front license plate.
