UI student remembered for selflessness, laugh, smile
11:56 PM 2/25/2008 — Robert H. Davis, 21, was a senior in LAS studying integrative biology, a member of the Illini Emergency Medical Services, a member of the What You Will Shakespeare Company, an aspiring musician, a talented cook and a kid-at-heart. Davis died at 8:49 p.m. Thursday at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, and according to his family, mononucleosis had depleted his white blood cell count when Davis contracted a common staphylococcus infection that his body could not fight off.

NIU braces itself as classes resume
11:32 PM 2/24/2008 — DEKALB, Ill. - The lecture hall where the shooting occurred is closed for the rest of the semester. Extra police and security guards will be on hand. Volunteer counselors will man each classroom, academic department and dormitory. When classes resume Monday, Northern Illinois University will be transformed by the rampage in which five students and gunman Steve Kazmierczak were killed.

5:18 PM 2/25/2008 — A female sophomore student in the College of Communications is recovering at Carle Hospital after contracting meningococcal meningitis and being hospitalized last Wednesday.

MTD, UI combine efforts to reduce bus emissions
11:26 PM 2/24/2008 — Buses on campus and in the Champaign-Urbana area are now contributing less to the problem of air pollution with new filters on their older vehicles, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District announced this week.
In January, four buses on campus routes were outfitted with new filters to reduce emissions and the burning of diesel fuels, said C-U MTD in a Feb.

Airline says devices were working on flight when woman died; cousin blames faulty equipment
1:51 PM 2/25/2008 — NEW YORK - American Airlines on Monday insisted it tried to help a passenger who died after complaining she couldn't breathe, and disputed the account of a relative who said that she was denied oxygen and that medical devices failed.
The airline said the oxygen tanks and a defibrillator were working and noted that several medical professionals on the flight, including a doctor, tried to save passenger Carine Desir, 44, who had heart disease.

Helicopter shot down on Turkey-Iraq border
11:41 PM 2/24/2008 — CUKURCA, Turkey - A Turkish helicopter crashed in Iraq and eight soldiers were killed during a cross-border ground operation against Kurdish rebels, who planted booby traps on the bodies of their slain comrades, Turkey's military said Sunday.
The guerrillas said they shot down a Turkish military helicopter near the Turkish-Iraqi border.

Unrug disqualified from race

"I talked to everyone that I could, but I had a good run," Unrug said.
