11:56 AM 2/28/2008 — NEWARK, N.J. - A man pleaded guilty Thursday to making bogus Internet postings warning of terrorist attacks against seven NFL stadiums in 2006.
Jake J. Brahm admitted that he posted false information that so-called dirty bombs would be detonated at the stadiums in Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland, Cleveland and New York on Oct.

Explosion hits building in Waukegan
5:42 PM 2/28/2008 — WAUKEGAN, Ill. - An explosion has hit a shopping plaza in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan.
Firefighters from several departments responded to the scene. The building that housed a tuxedo rental store, a hair salon, a cell phone business and a travel agency was gutted and the roof has collapsed.

Bush says country not headed into a recession
12:17 PM 2/28/2008 — WASHINGTON - President Bush said Thursday the country is not recession-bound and, despite expressing concern about slowing economic growth, rejected for now any additional stimulus efforts. "We acted robustly," he said.
"We'll see the effects of this pro-growth package," Bush told reporters at a White House news conference, acknowledging that some lawmakers already are talking about a second stimulus package.

University alumnus diagnosed with meningitis
1:05 PM 2/28/2008 — The second case of meningococcal meningitis has been reported within the past week on campus.
A recent University alumnus has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, and was admitted to a local hospital Wednesday night according to Dr. Robert Palinkas, director of McKinley Health Center.

Schmitt wins trustee election
9:59 PM 2/28/2008 — Paul Schmitt, junior in LAS and former Illini Media employee, was declared the unofficial winner of the race for student trustee. Out of the 10,367 ballots cast, Schmitt defeated his opponent, junior in Business Rob Main, by a vote of 4,242 to 3,554. All three referenda on the ballot passed, including a ballot to measure student opinions on the reinstatement of the University's former symbol Chief Illiniwek.

NIU will demolish, replace Cole Hall

Compact sets environmental goals for schools
10:36 PM 2/27/2008 — Across Illinois, 35 colleges and universities signed the Sustainable Universities Compact from the Lieutenant Governor's office, agreeing to accomplish environmental goals by 2010. However, the University is not among those that signed the compact.
The compact, which began in 2006, has a list of 12 goals that include developing environmental transportation options, implementing green building practices and incorporating sustainable dining practices in school cafeterias.

British children's facility questioned

Secretary of State's Office Offers its Services to the University
4:00 PM 2/28/2008 — Secretary of State Jesse White's office came to the Illini Union on Wednesday to offer a variety of driver and vehicle services for one day to University of Illinois students and staff.
The mobile office set up shop on the third floor of the Union to allow University students and staff to renew their driver's licenses, purchase license plate stickers, and register to be an organ donor among other things.

Odds and Ends: Robbers steal $415,000 worth of chocolate in Israel
8:54 PM 2/27/2008 — JERUSALEM - Israeli police are on the lookout for a thief with a super-sized chocolate craving. The robbers broke into a factory in the northern Israeli city of Haifa late Monday and walked away with nearly 100 tons of chocolate spread. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said such a large heist indicated it may have been an inside job and police were searching the area of any traces of the sweet.

8:59 PM 2/27/2008 — Champaign A 33-year-old man was arrested for burglary at Meijer, 2401 N. Prospect Ave., early Wednesday morning. According to a police report, the offender was arrested after he stole three bottles of alcohol and fled the store without paying for the items.
