Students stage die-in on Quad
4:49 PM 3/18/2008 — Thursday morning was an unusual one for Karen Medina, graduate student.
Instead of studying for exams or sitting in class, she was chalking body outlines on the Quad.
Medina and dozens of other anti-war activists took to the streets Thursday morning to stage a march and "die-in" protest as a way of demonstrating their discontent with the upcoming fifth anniversary of the Iraq war.

Defendant sentenced for involvement in real estate scheme
9:34 AM 3/14/2008 — A third defendant has been sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for his involvement in a real estate "flipping" scheme that involved properties in Springfield and Decatur.
Frank Kelly Ciota, 47, of Riverton, Ill. pled guilty to one count of bank fraud, one count of wire fraud, five counts of mail fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Churches take week of prayer for AIDS healing and awareness
9:39 PM 3/13/2008 — Local African-American churches took part in a nationwide week of prayer for the healing of AIDS last week. The event took place with the help of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, which provided free educational resources to support the cause.
"Statistically, African-Americans are being more exposed to HIV," said Janice Walker, Public Health District prevention specialist.

10:04 PM 3/13/2008 — Frank Kelly Ciota, Riverton, Ill., the second of a criminal trio involved in a real estate "flipping scheme," was sentenced to a term of 97 months in prison. According to a press release by the Department of Justice, Ciota pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud, one count of wire fraud, five counts of mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Campus band embarking on European trip

Members of the Marching Illini are packing their bags and instruments, crossing the Atlantic Ocean and spending their spring break in Ireland and England.
The band members are performing and traveling in Galway and Dublin, Ireland, and in London from this past Thursday through March 21.

7:09 PM 3/13/2008 — Champaign Busey Bank, 909 W. Kirby Ave., reported forgery Monday afternoon. According to a police report, a 21-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman, a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman are suspected of causing loss to Busey Bank by cashing counterfeit checks at various Busey locations.
