Circus cancels Champaign show
The Apr. 20, 6 p.m. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show at Assembly Hall has been canceled by show management.
"The show's management contacted us and told they wanted to cancel, and that's really all we know at this point," said Assembly Hall assistant director of marketing, Jennifer Larson.
Those with tickets for the canceled show are encouraged to contact the Assembly Hall Box Office at (217) 333-5000 to exchange their tickets for one of the circus' four other performances.
Those performances will take place Apr. 18 at 7 p.m., Apr. 19 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Apr. 20 at 2 p.m.
Larson said the sooner patrons exchange their tickets the better since seats for the other four shows are selling fast.
Toxicologist develops drinking water toxin database
University toxicologist Michael Plewa has developed a comprehensive in vitro database of the toxicity levels of disinfectant by-products, materials thyat are created during the purification of drinking water and can sometimes cause major health problems.
The project was partially funded by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and was aided by scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency.
"Approximately 600 DBPs have been identified, which represents only a fraction of the total number," Plewa said in a press release.
For those worried about the presence of DBPs in their drinking water, Plewa recommends a point-of-use water filter.
Mental Health Center to host youth summit
Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19 from Champaign County are invited to the second annual Say It Your Way: Youth Summit sponsored by the Mental Health Center of Champaign County.
The event will take place on Apr. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 202 W. Park St. in Champaign. Various events and contests are planned.
Summit leaders said the event aims to bring youths together to network and plan ways to change their bodies, schools, and communities.

Hospital announces award winners
Carle Foundation Hospital recognized Uretz Oliphant, M.D. and Curtis Krock, M.D., both of Champaign, at its recent Medical Staff Recognition Awards.
Candidates for the awards are nominated by their peers and chosen by a committee of past recipients.
Oliphant was named "Physician of the Year." He specializes in trauma surgery, critical care medicine, general/laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery and joined Carle Clinic Association in 1992. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He is currently the chief of trauma at Carle Foundation Hospital and the chief of surgery for the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign.
Krock was honored with "Educator of the Year." He joined Carle Clinic Association in 1972. He retired from practice in 2001 and has served as chief of medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign for the past two-and-a-half years.
School to dedicate new playground
Washington Early Childhood School in Urbana will hold a special ribbon cutting ceremony for its new plaground Apr. 9 at 9:15 a.m.
The plaground, whose construction was aide by private funds, was built with the developmental needs of early childhood students in mind.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held Apr. 10.
CUPHD focuses on climate change, potential community health risks
The theme to this year's National Public Health Week is "Climate Change: Our Health in the Balance." Climate change may cause extreme weather events and changes in rainfall that increase the risk of death and disease. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, CUPHD, is urging ceitizens to take this week to commit to simple changes to make the climate healthier.
Urbana School District presents high school restructuring plan to school board
Urbana School District administrators presented a restructuring plan to the Board of Education. The plan is mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act for all schools who fail to meet Adequate Yearly Progress, AYP, for five straight years. The plan hopes to provide support for students and teachers in learning and teaching core classes. The final vote on the plan is scheduled for Apr. 15.
CrimeStoppers, police seek information on armed robbery
On Feb. 15 at 3:27 a.m. a cab driver reported a subject had asked for a ride from the Super Pantry, 1511 N. Prospect Ave., to Meijer, 2401 N. Prospect Ave. When the cab entered the store's parking lot, the subject pulled a knife on the cab driver and demanded money. The cab driver jumped from the cab and the subject fled on foot. Subject is described as a black male, 25-30 years old, 6' to 6'3" tall, thin build, unshaven and wearing a black hat and red corduroy jacket. Any tips on this crime, please call CrimeStoppers at (217) 373-TIPS or (217) 373-8477. Cash rewards will be given for information that leads to an arrest.
CDC warns adults to get cholesterol screenings regularly
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that all adults over the age of 20 to get their cholesterol number checked every five years. Anyone with a family history of high cholesterol, heart disease or high blood pressure should be checked regularly. The Vermilion County Health Department is offering special evening cholesterol screenings in their Danville favility, 200 S. College St. Thurs. Apr. 24, 29 and on June 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at a cost of $7. Call (217) 431-2662 to schedule an appointment.
Carle names Lifetime Achievement/Legacy Award recipient
Merrill W. Huffman, MD, of Urbana was honored this award as a physician that has left a lasting impression on Carle. He joined Carle Clinic Association in 1960 as its fourth obstetrics and gynecology physician. During his 36-year tenure, medicine underwent significant changes. He retired from practice in 1997.
