Student Senate urges cities to move signing dates for leases to February
12:31 AM 4/22/2008 — Students that would normally be scrambling to solidify their living situations for the following academic year in the early weeks of first semester might be resting easier this fall.
On April 2, the Illinois Student Senate passed a resolution urging the Champaign and Urbana city councils and the Savoy Board of Trustees to adopt an ordinance prohibiting a lessor from entering into a lease or pre-lease more than 200 days before the contract takes effect.

Champaign co-sponsors programs across area to help environment
10:25 PM 4/22/2008 — Students and residents living in the city of Champaign may have a harder time finding ways to recycle and help the environment than people living in Urbana, but there are some programs available.
Champaign does not have a recycling program that collects from residents' homes or apartments, said Eleanor Blackman, assistant city engineer in the environmental section of the Champaign city government.

Extension Partners lobby for withheld funds
12:24 AM 4/22/2008 — Members of the organization Extension Partners met in Springfield with state legislators Wednesday to lobby for UI Extension, whose employees learned earlier this month that it will not be receiving the state funds they had expected.
The lack of funding will cause the program to cut about 450 jobs statewide, according to a press release.

Suspicious bag causes class evacuation
12:35 AM 4/22/2008 — The presence of an unattended black bag in 116 Roger Adams Laboratory caused a statistics class of about 200 students to be evacuated Monday.
The bag was not present in the room at the beginning of the speech communications class at 11 a.m., but the professor noticed it at the end of class on a chair behind the teaching podium, said Hannah Prince, freshman in LAS.

The cost of food has increased by around 40 percent since mid-2007 worldwide, and the strain has caused riots and protests in countries like Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Egypt.

Alternative fuels gain use, reduce gas prices
12:09 AM 4/22/2008 — While the answer to the question of alternative fuels has not yet been determined, ethanol may play a role in the solution despite its possible consequences on a global scale. While Illinois was at one time the No. 1 producer of ethanol, the state is now somewhere between second and third as other states such as Iowa and Nebraska have increased their production in recent years, said Mark Lambert, communications director of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board.

Authorities said Monday that state and local investigators acting on a tip went to the Pizza Hut restaurant and found six ounces of marijuana and a set of digital scales in the manager's office.

9:19 PM 4/21/2008 — Champaign A 23-year-old woman from St. Joseph, Ill., reported criminal damage to property at the 800 block of North Prospect Avenue, Sunday afternoon. According to a police report, a 44-year-old male suspect damaged two tires of the victim's vehicle by cutting the valve stems and sidewalls.
