Champaign attempts to curb crime
12:20 AM 4/24/2008 — The city of Champaign responded to last summer's increased youth crime by implementing programs to engage youth in the Garden Hills neighborhood and keep them out of trouble.
"Operation Hope in Garden Hills" is a result of the higher crime rate, believed to be from the lack of structured activities, and part of a Champaign City Council goal to improve the overall quality of life in the city.

Field turf project receives criticism
12:08 AM 4/24/2008 — Construction on the University intramural fields is scheduled to begin this summer and to be completed in August, but environmental concerns have circulated around the renovations.
The Board of Trustees voted and approved to replace the intramural sports fields, located at Stadium Drive and First Street in Champaign, with artificial turf, which some environmental and public health groups have pegged as harmful.

Group sets up 'center' in front of Swanlund
12:46 AM 4/24/2008 — After setting up a tent on the Quad in March, Allies for a Women's Center chose to "take up space" at the plaza in front of Swanlund Administration Building on Wednesday. The group hopes to gain support for a space for gender equity on campus.
"We have to do it on the plaza in front of Swanlund because we have no space," said Elise Ruark, senior in LAS and member of the Allies.

"It's a new alternative," said Neal Coxworth, director of marketplace development at Fynanz.com. "The students have a tremendous amount of control.

Senate asks to add minors to transcripts
12:23 AM 4/24/2008 — The Illinois Student Senate passed a resolution Wednesday night authored by the Academic Affairs Committee asking the University to include completed minors on a student's transcript before degrees are posted.
Currently, University transcripts do not make a distinction for students who have completed all requirements for a minor that has been declared before graduation.

So they joined the growing number of farmers in America's Dairyland who broke with tradition by turning to grazing - saving them money and freeing up time.

Relay for Life raises money for cancer research, awareness
12:24 AM 4/24/2008 — Participants of the American Cancer Society's 7th annual Relay for Life, an event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and to raise money for research and awareness, raised $200,000 Friday at the Armory.
"I guess (the money goes) to some branch of cancer research, I'm not quite certain," said participant and freshman in LAS Megan Hay.

Odds and Ends: Hospital closes to fumigate for poisonous spiders, eggs
12:29 AM 4/24/2008 — SYDNEY, Australia - A tiny Australian hospital is closing temporarily because of an infestation of poisonous spiders. The Baralaba Multi Purpose Health Service will close for 24 hours starting Thursday morning so officials can fumigate the building to get rid of redback spiders that have been found in large numbers in the main part of the hospital.

12:21 AM 4/24/2008 — Champaign A 32-year-old woman reported residential burglary at the 900 block of Kenwood Avenue on Monday afternoon. According to a police report, unknown thieves entered the victim's residence and removed items without permission. The thief stole a gold diamond ring, a gold ruby ring, a gold ring with assorted gems, a gold wedding ring set with diamonds, two gold rings with cut diamonds, coins and cash, an Xbox game system and a digital camera.
