Students critique emergency text system

Working hard or hardly working?
12:37 AM 5/1/2008 — Reading Day may not be the correct term for Thursday's day off of classes, according to students on campus. For Alex Mallo, it's more of an anything-but-reading day. "I'm going to sleep all day on Thursday," Mallo, freshman in LAS, said jokingly. Students' plans may differ from what University officials have in mind since some students have already had some of their final exams and won't have another until sometime next week.

Closed sidewalks cause safety risks
12:39 AM 5/1/2008 — There used to be a sidewalk along the south side of Gregory Drive.
Now there's only chain link fence.
The recent construction along Gregory and Peabody drives has altered the landscape of the residence halls in that area and its residential life. It will continue to do so until at least 2010 when the first phase of construction for a new dining facility and resident hall wing will be completed, said University spokesperson Robin Kaler.

Law textbooks to add Web interface
10:48 PM 4/30/2008 — New law textbooks are combining conventional print with an interactive online version in an attempt to connect with the modern technological student.
Michael Murray, a University law professor, is co-writing the new first-year law textbooks with Christy DeSanctis, a professor at George Washington University School of Law, and the books will be available for the fall 2009 semester, Murray said.

Student senate encourages creating sustainability office
12:02 AM 5/1/2008 — In the last Illinois Student Senate meeting of the year, the senate passed a resolution encouraging the creation of an Office of Sustainability. This office would work with pre-existing student groups on campus to advance environmental projects and increase funding and research for efficiency, said Dan Weber, freshman in LAS and student senator.

Marketing method attracts teenagers
10:50 PM 4/30/2008 — WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Wilkes University badly wanted 18-year-old Nicole Pollock to be part of its freshman class this fall - so much so that it made her the star of her own ad campaign.
The small, private school in northeastern Pennsylvania plastered Pollock's name on billboards, pizza boxes and gas pumps - and even aired a commercial on MTV - in hopes of getting her to enroll.

Odds and Ends: Boy Scout finds, returns wallet containing $800
11:01 PM 4/30/2008 — DORR, Mich. - When an 11-year-old Boy Scout found someone's wallet with $800 inside, he understood what the person who lost it was going through.
Only a few weeks before, he had lost his own wallet and the $45 it contained.
J.R. Bouterse immediately told an adult about his discovery, which was turned over to a law-enforcement official and returned to its grateful owner.

Police report
10:58 PM 4/30/2008 — Champaign A 20-year-old man reported robbery at the 100 block of East Springfield Avenue on Friday morning. According to a police report, an unknown offender struck the victim in the face, breaking his glasses. The offender then stole the victim's wallet. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
