Taking photos may help renters reclaim security deposits
12:13 AM 5/12/2008 — During the last months of leases in Campustown apartments, students begin to wonder whether they will receive their security deposits back after they move out of their apartment or how much they will get back.
Along with helping students obtain a fair leasing agreement, research complaints on landlords before renting and file landlord complaints, the University of Illinois Tenant Union works to get security deposits back if landlords keep them without reason.

In lieu of phone ban, Urbana may toughen penalties for distracted drivers
12:04 AM 5/12/2008 — For the time being, an Urbana blanket ban on cell phone usage while driving will likely be substituted for an ordinance placing harsher penalties on drivers who become involved in a collision while using their cell phone.
"Rather than ban cell phones, what we want to do is have a general ordinance that you can treat (these instances) as an aggravated incident," said Charlie Smyth, Committee of the Whole chair and Ward 1 alderman.

Campus security act passes state Senate committee

In an attempt to help make campuses across Illinois safer, the act requires colleges and universities to develop and exercise emergency response and violence prevention programs.

Search ends in arrest of Champaign armed robbery suspect
12:18 AM 5/12/2008 — Champaign police have arrested a suspect in connection with an armed robbery Friday evening.
Witnesses said SWAT team members emerged from the apartment building's parking garage chasing a black man wearing a white T-shirt.
The officers brought the man to the ground and handcuffed him.

SIU scholarship planned in honor of deceased student
12:00 AM 5/12/2008 — CARBONDALE, Ill. - Four professors at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale are launching what they hope becomes a scholarship fund in a late journalism student's name.
Ryan Rendleman was a 22-year-old SIU photojournalism student from Batavia when he was killed last month in an accident at a southern Illinois construction zone.
