Vigil remembers earthquake victims
12:13 AM 5/16/2008 — While the earthquake that hit the Sichuan Province in China last Monday continues to claim lives, students and other members of the Chinese community on campus gathered on the Quad Thursday night to remember those who have died.
The vigil included a speech given in both Chinese and English, a moment of silence for the victims and families and an opportunity for students to light candles and sing along to "We are the World.

Higher education bills pass through senate committee
12:18 PM 5/16/2008 — The Illinois Senate Higher Education committee unanimously passed bills concerning in-state tuition for military personnel and admittance of state scholars during their session Wednesday.
HB5905, which guarantees in-state tuition for active duty military personnel reassigned to an out-of-state post or to a different country, was unanimously passed by the House on April 16.

Costly changes dampen C-U summer

The culprit: gas prices.
Currently, gas prices around Champaign and Urbana are hovering around $3.89 per gallon and the future does not look good.

Fisher man killed in Champaign County car crash
5:24 PM 5/18/2008 — A 25-year-old Fisher, Ill. man was pronounced dead at the scene of a car crash early Saturday morning.
An autopsy will be conducted on the victim, Brett W. Tolley, according to the Champaign County Coroner's Office.
The crash occurred in rural Champaign County at 2800 N County Road 700 E in Condit Township.

New e-mail address ready for student, faculty use
11:26 PM 5/16/2008 — The University began the process that will transition all "@uiuc.edu" e-mail addresses to "@illinois.edu." The activation of the new address went into effect May 13, according to a mass e-mail sent by Chancellor Richard Herman this morning. Since then, all mail sent to the old address has been forwarded to the new address.

Freeport-based company purchases Danville plant with help from state
11:28 PM 5/16/2008 — Blackhawk Biofuels, LLC has completed the purchase of a 45 million gallons per year biodiesel plant in Danville, Ill.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced Thursday that the state will contribute $19.8 million in addition to the $25 million in funding from Blackhawk to finish the construction and upgrades to the plant.

12:19 AM 5/16/2008 — MUSKOGEE, Okla. - A 19-year-old freshman at the University of Oklahoma was elected mayor of Muskogee, a city of 38,000 in the northeastern part of the state on Tuesday. With all precincts reporting, John Tyler Hammons won with 70 percent of the vote over former Mayor Hershel Ray McBride, said Muskogee County Election Board Secretary Bill Bull.

12:43 AM 5/16/2008 — Urbana Burglary was reported at the 1000 block of west Stoughton Street Wednesday afternoon. According to a police report, a 20-year-old man and a 27-year-old man reported their vehicles had been broken into. Passenger side windows were broken and a GPS system, Fendi sunglasses, currency and another pair of sunglasses were stolen.
