The Champaign City Council will be deciding the future of the University District at its meeting Tuesday night.
The University District Action Plan, which will be presented to the Council for approval, provides the framework for some of the strategies and plans the city of Champaign will implement in the coming years. With some projects already under construction and others planned, the cost will be more than $300 million.
The plan covers a variety of subjects, including development in the area, safety, transportation and the overall look of the area.
The University District Action Plan includes making improvements to Green Street between Fourth and First streets, which the Council discussed at a study session in March. Their plan for that area, as well as the rest of Green Street in Campustown, was to create an area where students can do all of their shopping in one place and not have to travel to other areas of the city.
Champaign City Council meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the City Building.

Funny, twenty years ago when I was a student Champaign was trying to get students off of campus to take part in the greater community. They created and expanded the bus system, making trips to the mall far more possible for the average student. (Continued…)
