Illinois leaders endorse coalition's capital bill proposal
4:53 PM 5/28/2008 — Illinois state officials including the governor and leaders of both legislative chambers have endorsed passage of a capital plan issued last week with a $31 billion price tag. Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Senate President Emil Jones, Senate Minority Leader Frank Watson and House Minority Leader Tom Cross announced their approval of the plan drafted by the governor's Illinois Works coalition which would give the state its first capital bill in nine years.

Comptroller says Illinois needs to find other higher education funding

Champaign Council moves forward with standardized lighting plan
2:08 PM 5/28/2008 — The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday night to move forward with a plan to standardize streetlights. The city plans to work with the University and the city of Urbana.
The plan calls for requesting proposals from manufacturers for street lights within the University District, which is bounded by University Avenue to the north, the IC/CR Railroad tracks to the west, Wright Street to the east and Gregory Drive to the south.

Southern Illinois communities waiting on second flood funding requests
4:42 PM 5/28/2008 — Officials from local, state, and federal governments re-surveyed property damaged in 15 southern Illinois counties from early March flooding to determine if they qualify for federal assistance last week.

Champaign pools open for summer
11:41 PM 5/26/2008 — A pool may not have been the most ideal spot for the Memorial Day weekend, given the temperatures and rain. But there were plenty who were willing to brave less-than-ideal elements to enjoy the seasonal opening of the Sholem Aquatic Center in Champaign.
Saturday marked the second full year that the pool would operate year-round since its renovation and reopening in 2006.

Urbana City Council discusses plans for lighting
4:34 PM 5/28/2008 — The Urbana City Council discussed ways to minimize both energy costs and light pollution with plans for city lighting at their meeting Tuesday night.
Councilmember Charlie Smyth, Ward 1, proposed that "all current and planned city lighting projects will use full cutoff lighting and conform to at least LEED lighting standards to reduce energy costs and minimize light trespass.

Plan to fund Lincoln Hall renovation proposed
3:28 PM 5/28/2008 — Following a series of 30 public hearings and meetings that began in March, a coalition created by Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced last Tuesday a $31 billion comprehensive infrastructure plan and recommendations on how to fund the plan. If brought to the Illinois General Assembly and approved, the University would be allotted a great portion of the funds including money for the renovation of Lincoln Hall.

Illinois among states suing government over new smog rules
10:06 PM 5/27/2008 — HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut's attorney general says several states, including Illinois, are suing to overturn what they call weak federal ozone standards.
Richard Blumenthal announced the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Hearing scheduled for Champaign standoff suspect
10:01 PM 5/27/2008 — A man arrested in a Champaign standoff made a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
Terrance Gowder, 18, charged with one count of armed robbery, had a pretrial hearing scheduled for July 29 in Champaign County Court.
Gowder allegedly robbed a man at an ATM before running into a Champaign apartment complex where he was found by police and arrested five hours later.

Illinois escapes brunt of storms
2:02 PM 5/28/2008 — Many areas of Illinois are bracing for prospects of more severe weather on the heels of rumbling storms that dumped hail and several inches of rain on some stretches since Sunday.
The National Weather Service says there's been no immediate evidence of tornados having touched down the state.

According to a police report, a 35-year-old St. Joseph, Ill. man gave the unknown offender a ride to his apartment. After dropping the man off at the apartment building, the victim realized that money had been stolen from his vehicle.

A 12-year-old girl picking up a seedless watermelon from a bin was stung Sunday by a tan, inch-long scorpion that had apparently stowed away in a shipment from Mexico.

Illinois congressman hopes to create fund to help military family
10:06 PM 5/27/2008 — CHICAGO - Illinois' newest congressman is sponsoring legislation aimed at helping military families nationwide who face financial hardship when loved ones are called for active duty.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, who won a March special election to fill the remainder of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's term, wants to model a National Military Family Relief Fund after an Illinois program signed into law in 2003.
