Thanks to the "See Your Solider" program, Regan, a young soldier in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Taji in Iraq, spoke face-to-face - via videophone - with a group of his family through the "See Your Solider" program at the University of Illinois Extension Center in Champaign.

House defeats gambling expansion plan
3:55 PM 7/10/2008 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The major funding source for Governor Rod Blagojevich's statewide construction plan has been defeated in the House.
The legislation would have approved a casino in downtown Chicago and two other new casinos. It would have allowed existing casinos to expand and permit slot machines and horse racing tracks.

Calabrese postpones formal candidacy announcement
8:20 PM 7/9/2008 — University senior Frank Calabrese has postponed his formal announcement to run for state representative for the 103rd district.
The announcement was scheduled to take place Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. by the University's Alma Mater at Green and Wright streets, but will now happen Sunday, July 13 at noon at the same location.

Curtis Road interchange hoped to foster commercial growth
1:39 PM 7/9/2008 — Since the Curtis Road and I-57 interchange has opened, city planners hope new business opportunities will follow traffic to the area.
The area, while owned by the city of Champaign, is mainly part of the village of Savoy. Its proximity to the highway has made the area prime real estate for more businesses to be successful.

Blagojevich slashes state budget by $211 million
7:14 PM 7/9/2008 — SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Gov. Rod Blagojevich cut $211 million from the state budget Wednesday by vetoing money for programs he supports, including subsidies so students, seniors and the disabled can ride for free or cheap on public transportation.
Blagojevich has complained the budget the General Assembly sent him was $2 billion out of whack and he threatened the cuts unless lawmakers came up with more money.

Police warn citizens about scam e-mail
8:45 PM 7/9/2008 — The Champaign Police Department are warning citizens about a scam e-mail which has its origins in Poland.
According to a press release issued by the CPD, officers were dispatched to the 00 block of E. Main Street on July 23 due to an e-mail a man received at work which he perceived as a threat.

C-U commission to hold digital TV information session
8:51 PM 7/9/2008 — Starting February 17, 2009, television stations are scheduled to stop broadcasting to televisions not connected to cable or satellite systems. In order to better inform the community, the Champaign-Urbana Cable Television and Telecommunications Commission will be holding a study session Wednesday at 4 p.m. to address concerns and questions about the switch.

Police reports
8:25 PM 7/9/2008 — Champaign Burglary was reported at the 500 block of west Marketview Drive on April 21. According to a police report, coils of copper wire were stolen from a construction site sometime during the night. No arrests had been made at the time of the report. Theft was reported at Gymboree at the 2000 block of north Neil Street Monday.

Odds 'n' ends: Man robbed buying crack calls cops who arrest him
8:17 PM 7/9/2008 — HARTFORD, Conn. - An East Hartford man called police to report he had been robbed while trying to buy crack cocaine. Max Minnefield called police Monday to tell them he had paid a man and a woman $8 for drugs he never received. Police charged him with criminal attempt to commit possession of narcotics.

Rape crisis center's services spared from governor's budget cuts
8:21 PM 7/9/2008 — State rape crisis centers were spared from the governor's budget cuts last week, much to the relief of 33 centers in Illinois. The centers' staff had rallied against the cuts, arguing they would force the end of walk-in facilities, educational programs and 24-hour hotlines.

Champaign to receive more user-friendly city website
8:47 PM 7/9/2008 — A draft of the new city of Champaign Web site was presented to the Champaign City Council during its study session Tuesday night.
The new site, which will still not be launched for some time, will have a new layout designed to reduce the cluttered look of the current one.

I-74 westbound lane open after semi collision
8:32 PM 7/9/2008 — The westbound passing lane on I-74 is now open after being closed early this morning due to an overturned tank truck which sent one man to the hospital.
According to an Illinois State Police press release, at 3:22 a.m. a semi truck was heading west on I-74 tried to use a turnaround to change direction.
