A University graduate student was killed Tuesday after a hit-and-run, according to Illinois state police.
Yingbo Zhou died in the incident, which occurred on Interstate 74 on Monday.
Illinois state police Sgt. William Emery said a man is in police custody, but that he could not release any further information about the investigation.
John Unsworth, dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, said Zhou was president of a Chinese students group on campus. Unsworth said students in the group helped him get in touch with Zhou’s parents.
“I was able to talk to her father at about 7 o’clock last night,” he said.

Unsworth said he and another student are working to help the parents, who are not in the country, find a means of travel.
He said police are relaying as many details as possible about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We’re investigating the situation and they have someone in custody,” Unsworth said. “They don’t want to talk about an ongoing investigation.”
Unsworth said Zhou was an excellent student at the University who was working toward a master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
“She was a wonderful person, she had a lot of friends, she was a leader in her classes,” he said.
