Charges dropped against youth in Kiwane Carrington incident

Criminal charges were dismissed Tuesday against 16 year old Jeshaun Manning-Carter of Champaign.

Manning-Carter was charged with aggravated resisting a police officer on October 9. His friend Kiwane Carrington was killed by the Champaign police in the encounter with police Chief R.T. Finney and officer Dan Norbits.

Brian Dolinar, community activist said that Champaign County’s State Attorney Julia Rietz dismissed the charges because she had asked Manning-Carter to follow three conditions: stay out of trouble, stay in school and completed the Parenting with Love and Limits program. Dolinar said Reitz was holding her end of the bargain.

Dolinar is one of fifteen community members, part of Champaign Urbana Citizens for Peace and Justice who had been following the case since the beginning and were waiting outside the court room for the verdict.
