Graduation

With graduation around the corner, many students are facing the reality of hunting for jobs.

"I just got really frustrated because it was really hard," said Sophie Malik, senior in International Studies and Spanish.

Malik said she went to job fairs and searched online for available positions.

The Student Alumni Ambassadors and other registered student organizations are sponsoring the first ever Grad Week, a week of events to celebrate the graduating class of 2008. "A lot of people wanted a senior week," said Sarah Losh, junior in LAS and one of the Student Alumni Ambassadors who helped plan the events.

When Haley Drake graduates, she thinks Facebook will help her keep in touch with friends and classmates.

"Just the news feeds alone give you information on people you haven't seen in years," said Drake, senior in Media. "And you can chat and send updates.

While some students dream of scoring a big business job and making big bucks after graduating from college, others want to experience another side of life.
Stephanie Chin, senior in Business, said she thought about jumping into the 9 to 5 lifestyle by working in marketing for British Petroleum, but she has decided upon a different path.

As the semester's end approaches, it comes time for the University's graduates to move on into the real world. Graduation is a time to celebrate accomplishments, reminisce with old friends, and most of all for some, receive gifts.

T.I.S.Bookstore has found a variety of alumni and graduation memorabilia sell well each year.

A lot can happen in four years. Basketball teams can go from winning to losing, football teams can go from losing to winning and certain symbols can disappear from official existence.

Each semester goes by so fast, yet eight of them stacked together remind me just how much time has gone by.

The day before his interview with the Chicago Marshall Scholarship panel, Ian Clausen, senior in LAS and the first University student to be awarded the scholarship in more than 10 years, finally bought a suit that fit him.

The Marshall Scholarship provides roughly 40 recipients with two years of graduate study in the United Kingdom, which Clausen will use to study theological ethics at the University of Edinburgh.

I have a seriously bad case of senioritis - but I'm not graduating. Yet.

Although those of you who are graduating will say that I'm lucky to not have to enter the real world yet, I have to disagree.

Of course when you alumni have to start work every morning at 8, and you can't go to any more bomb nights, you'll be the jealous ones.

Meghan Collins has never been a typical student.

While her elementary school peers aspired to be firefighters, doctors and teachers in their adulthood, Collins declared that she wanted to be a Supreme Court justice in fourth grade.

"I idolized Sandra Day O'Connor," she said.

Campus-wide events
Saturday, May 10
Noon - 3 p.m. - Open house at the new Alice Campbell Alumni Center. There will be tours, food and entertainment for graduates and their families. The center is located on Lincoln Avenue near Illinois Street.

6 p.m. - The Native American House hosts a congratulatory program for all graduating American Indian students at the Native American House, 1206 West Nevada Street, Urbana.

I was asked to write this column not because I have ever written an opinion piece or have particularly articulate ones, at that. I am the lone graduating senior on the news staff of The Daily Illini, one of few upperclassmen who have not assumed an editor position at this publication.

When Justin Randall, student body president, heard about the shooting at Northern Illinois, he reacted immediately. He called administrators to discuss safety measures, talked with the media and began planning the vigil that was held on the Quad several days later.

Not even a year after speaking at my own high school graduation, I am contemplating college graduation - not my own of course, but the University class of 2008.

It's terrifying for me to even imagine graduating college and moving on to the real world right now, but I know it will happen someday.

While the rest of us are weighed down by finals, the class of 2008 is preparing for graduation, new jobs, moving or even continuing their education. Hopefully their time at the University, both in and out of class, has prepared them well for any situation they may face in the future.

Homecoming, Quad Day, Unofficial, bar crawls - just some of the many Illinois traditions seniors may never experience again.

After spending four or more years here, one senior said they will miss the orange-filled football stadium and the normalcy of going to six bars in one night.

After graduation students are faced with finding a new place to live whether they move back home or decide to venture out on their own.

Tenant unions off-campus rarely exist anymore, said Esther Patt, coordinator of the University tenant union.

"In most places, you're not going to be able to find anything like us," Patt said.

Graduating seniors usually have one leg out the University's door by the time April rolls around. By this time, most are more concerned with their quickly approaching future, wrapping up their final credit requirements and anxiously thinking ahead to a summer that, for once, won't be a vacation.

When Chris Kantas got access to $4 million dollars earmarked to update University buildings, he kept one thing in mind while deciding how Illinois should spend the cash. Kantas thought the cash should to rennovating Foellinger Auditorium because it is widely used by students in every major.

After four years of wearing orange and blue, early morning practices and representing the University of Illinois as a student-athlete Jackie Bain's academic and athletic careers at Illinois are coming to a close. For Bain, it has been four years of fun, hard work and dedication to the sport and school she loves.
