Moms Weekend

Many college students, myself included, find that one of the best parts about being here is not being with our parents. After 18 years of hanging around them, it can be pretty nice to have miles and miles of cornfields separating me from their influence.

Allison Liska owes her mother her life. One may wonder at the significance of this statement, as everyone can make the same claim.

Now that Moms weekend is right around the corner, I realize there were many things I never took into consideration when I decided to go to an out-of-state school, including how lonely Moms day would be without my mom in town.

A little more than a week ago I turned 20 - not an exciting birthday. I did, however, have a significant revelation concerning my mom when I turned 20.

And it all started with a birthday card.

Usually the birthday cards sent by my parents hold very loving and caring messages about how wonderful I am.

Tell your mother to leave the neon green poncho at home when she comes down for Mom's Weekend.

And that skimpy dress she found in your closet?

Don't let her wear that, either.

Every one of the moms heading to campus this weekend have the potential to wear something that will embarrass their Illini.

In a few days campus will explode with thousands of minivans and SUVs, hotels will be packed, restaurants will have lines out the door and the streets will be a sea of orange and blue. The moms are coming to town. Don't run and don't be afraid - there is no escape. For a few days your mom will be in town to take you shopping, criticize your decorating and living style and generally express her love.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the moment she reads this, my mother will be crying. I didn't do anything - I swear - except go off to college and write this column about her.

When the moms come into town this weekend, it's inevitable that the wait to get a table at your mom's favorite Urbana-Champaign restaurant is going to be longer than usual. So why not find a place with guaranteed seating - your very own kitchen.

Tackling the art of cooking can be a stressful task, but attempting to showcase your skills for mom doesn't have to be impossible.

Kim Rutledge went to her first University athletic event when she was only a few months old. As soon as the game began and the noise of the crowd rose, she started crying, scared.

Good thing she was accompanied by her mother, Nan Rutledge, the 2007-2008 president of the Mom's Association.

During Mom's Weekend, while many students will be busy spending time with their moms, the University's student moms will be caring for their own children.

People can forget that Mom's Weekend is for student moms as well as moms of students. Raising a child while meeting the demands of school can be challenging.
