New Student Guide

With over 40,000 students at the University representing a variety of backgrounds, more than 900 registered student organizations (RSOs) exist to cater to the many interests that exist on campus. Here's a list, broken up by category:

More than 7,000 students will be making the big jump from high school to the University this fall. Roughly 75 percent of those 7,000 students will have chosen to live in University Residence Halls.

After a year in college, I've been a model of success. I developed an antagonistic relationship with my roommate after I repeatedly locked her out (not on purpose, but try telling her that), got a B in a one-credit-hour class, and found myself stuck in a major in which I saw no practical value. But these experiences have not been without value. So let me explain.

Contacting the person who will be invading your personal space for the next academic year is a daunting step.

In my first class freshman year, my professor began to go on a rant saying that everyone needed to be careful here on campus. Most of the students expected her to begin to talk about drinking on campus, walking alone at night or something to that extent. This was not the case. She was talking about the bikes.

Deciding what classes to register for can be one of the most intimidating choices that an incoming freshman has to make. For some, the choice is most difficult for one simple reason—students don’t know what to sign up for or who they should ask.

During the halftime show of many college games, mascots come out, fully clothed, presenting and entertaining the crowd.

Taking in a men's basketball game at the University of Illinois is, to say the least, a vastly different experience than rooting on your high school roundballers. And it's also one that Meghan McCleary and Brett Zimmerman believe every new student should take in with one of the nation's best and most widely renowned student sections. Recap: The highlight of the season came early when Illinois took two of three from then-No. 1 LSU, who went on to win the national title at the College World Series.
