Activities and Recreation Center Gym 2 will be filled on Monday and Tuesday as 110 businesses and business-affiliated organizations will attend the 15th annual Winter Business Career Fair.

Hosted by Business Career Services of the College of Business, the career fair is scheduled to start at noon both days, allowing all University students the opportunity to meet with recruiters from top business firms.

Put away the distressed jeans, take off the flip-flops and cover the tattoo. The reality is your personal style and business professional style is different, and what seems to be your nicer set of clothing on campus may not be your future boss's idea of nice in a business setting.

For many students, the concept of choosing what to do with the rest of their lives is more than a daunting task, despite the fact that they've already begun college classes at the University. What can I do to increase my marketability? How can I stand out? When possible, seek opportunities such as internships, job shadows, class projects, etc., to demonstrate and improve your skills, which will increase your marketability to employers.

With the negative numbers mounting in industries across the board, the looming job search can seem more intimidating than ever before. Layoffs, furloughs and shutdowns have pushed University students to the Career Center earlier than in years past, searching for advice and some good news, according to Assistant Director Katie Kennealy.

The prospect of finding a job or internship is stressful enough for most students. "What do I actually want to do?" is the perennial question, and answers can be hard to come by. Adding to the pressure is the need to create a cover letter and resume that convinces employers to call back. You're on your own for deciding what career to pursue, but with these tips, putting together the materials to get that job can be a little easier.

I sometimes wonder if a time will come when I'm telling my children about my time in college, and they will inquire about my major. "I was a journalism major," I'll say. They will laugh and say, "Daddy, if you studied journalism, why haven't we ever seen you on the Cerebral News-o-tron?" (Remember, this is roughly the year 2023.) I will tell them to quit bugging him because daddy found a different job and to go play with the robot dog. Then I'll go back to work, which I presume will be easily accomplished from home and have a lax "drinking home-brewed beer on the job" policy.

An interview can bring a resume to life and put a face on a potential employee, according to staff at the University's Career Center. No pressure. But if you plan accordingly, an interview shouldn't stress any student to the point of anxiety.

I'll admit it. I'm worried about finding a job. As a junior, I don't have to face the job market just yet. But as a journalism major, I will soon be trying to enter a field that is busy downsizing and reorganizing just to stay alive. I've wanted to be a journalist since I was 12 years old, and I am not ready to abandon my reporting dreams in favor of a secure paycheck in a different field. I am too young to settle.
