It has been 13 days since the No. 11 Illinois men’s tennis team played a match. It will make up for the rest it had with a doubleheader Friday before a trip north Sunday.

Saturday, senior Brian Liscovitz will take to the floor for his last home meet as an Illinois gymnast. “I never thought this day would come,” Liscovitz said. “I’m looking forward to it, but not looking forward to it.” Emotions will be running high as the All-American and team captain closes the book on his Illini career with four other seniors.

Currently, out of 88 NCAA Championships, 41 are for men, 44 for women and three are co-ed. However, due to sports with large rosters, universities still struggle to meet the status quo.

Dergo, Blanton advance to quarterfinals at NCAAs

Illinois wrestlers John Dergo and Jordan Blanton each won twice Thursday at the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., propelling themselves into the tournament quarterfinals. Second-seeded Dergo dominated in his two matches, deafeating Pittsburgh’s Zac Thomusseit, 6-1, in his opening match before earning a technical fall over Andrew Saunders of UNC Greensboro in the evening session by a score of 21-5.

Women's Gymnastics

The No. 13 Illinois women’s gymnastics team heads to Normal, Ill., on Saturday for a quad meet with Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State and Northern Illinois, all of whom will be competing for the unofficial state championship. Coming off two straight wins against rivals Ohio State and Missouri, the team hopes to continue its momentum beyond this weekend into Big Ten Conference Championships next weekend.

With spring finally here, the women’s track and field team will begin its outdoor season on Friday at the Horned Frog Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Six Illini will compete during Friday’s meet, while head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said more team members will meet up with the competitors after the competition for a Spring Break trip.

Vanderbilt, Notre Dame upset early

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Danero Thomas hit a 15-footer as the buzzer sounded and 13th-seeded Murray State stunned No. 4 seed Vanderbilt 66-65 on Thursday in the NCAA tournament.

It was the school’s first victory in the NCAA tournament in 24 years, and Murray State will play Butler in the second round.

Lee Zerrusen filled just about every role a pitcher could have last season for the Illinois baseball team, as he started, closed and came on in long and middle relief out of the bullpen. After some early season struggles on the part of the Illini pitching staff, Zerrusen is again prepared to take on any role.
