Board of directors for the Illinois High School Association, or IHSA, voted June 14th to keep high school football and wrestling finals at the University.
While football finals has been hosted by the University since 1999 at Memorial Stadium, high school wrestling finals have taken place for a record-breaking 43 years at Assembly hall, according to a press release. The IHSA board of directors voted to keep both traditions alive throughout the 2014-2015 academic period.
“We here at the University of Illinois are excited to extend our relationship with the IHSA,” said Kent Brown, assistant athletic director for media relations with the University. “It’s been a very good relationship for quite some time.”
Brown said many benefits come out of hosting the finals every year, including the chance to “show off” Champaign-Urbana and the financial opportunities that arise from having thousands of people in the area.
“There are lots of benefits, including the ability to host outstanding high school student athletes on our campus,” he said.
