Men's Cross Country

What happened: Heading into the 2009 season, head coach Wendel McRaven had two main goals for his men’s cross country team. He wanted his team to be top-five in both meets of the championship season — the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.

Another year has gone by, 23 years now to be exact, since the Illinois men’s cross country team has raced in the NCAA National Championships. However, head coach Wendel McRaven’s crystal ball sees that changing in the very near future.

Last year, Colin Mickow was the third freshman to finish for the Illinois men’s cross country team at the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, placing 69th with a time of 33:00.90.

This year, the sophomore and top runner for the team placed 18th overall with a time of 31:18, earning All-Region accolades. However, Mickow failed to qualify for an individual bid to the NCAA National Championships.

At this point last year, the Illinois men’s cross country team was less than stellar, to say the least. “We were horrible last year,” head coach Wendel McRaven said.

Devil’s Ladder has a reputation to uphold. The road in Galena, Ill., is where the Illinois men’s cross country team’s first real test of every season lies. With hills that stretch up to 300 meters long, the Illini runners feel their legs burn as they strengthen themselves for each upcoming season.

The seventh place finish at Sunday's Big Ten Championship came as a disappointment for head coach Wendel McRaven and the rest of the Orange and Blue, who were looking for a finish in the top half of the conference.

Illinois cross country runners Colin Mickow and Dan Kremske were the first to cross the finish line in the men’s portion of the Illini Challenge at the Arboretum in Urbana on Friday. The crowd then had to wait more than 10 seconds until the next runner, the Illini’s Phil Pompei, completed the race.

The men's cross country team finished second to last in the Big Ten in 2008. Then things got even worse. This summer, the squad's potential top runner for the 2009 season, Jacob Nachel, quit the team.
