The red-hot Illini softball team is set to face their toughest test of the season this weekend in the Children’s Hospital Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The softball team appears to be headed in a different direction than Bruce Weber and Co., but there is much to be learned from the struggling hoop stars. In a scheduling coincidence, No. 21 Illinois (14-1) was scheduled to take to the diamond Tuesday against Bradley, a game that would have bared an eerie resemblance to the men’s basketball’s Nov. 28 matchup with Bradley in Las Vegas.

The crowning victory of the Illinois softball team’s weekend was the win that almost wasn’t. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth in the opening game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, the Illini’s chances appeared grim. Florida State junior Sarah Hamilton was on the mound, and the All-American appeared to be in midseason form, no-hitting Illinois through the first five frames for the No. 22 Seminoles.

But this year’s group has one undeniable edge over its accolade-garnering predecessors: experience.
