The Illinois men’s basketball team isn’t where it wants to be, but it is moving on in the postseason.

Demetri McCamey had 16 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds and Mike Davis scored 17 points to lead Illinois past Stony Brook, 76-66, on Wednesday night in a first-round NIT game before a sell-out crowd of 4,423 at Stony Brook Arena.

I probably take sports a little too seriously sometimes.

Watching a game with me can be a strange experience. I yell loudly. I get frustrated. I have violent mood swings — angry at a bone-headed play one moment only to be elated seconds later if my team does something to make it all better. I’ve even been known to throw a remote or two.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Evan Turner sat down and, just like a lot of kids would if given the chance to play with a live microphone, began to make a rhythm sound with his mouth while pretending he was performing in concert. “This is a March Madness piece,” he said, laughing.

Some said they saw dollar signs flying through the air Wednesday, as NFL scouts from just about every team watched Illinois football’s pro timing day at Irwin Indoor Practice Facility. Former Illinois receiver Arrelious Benn flew through the finish line of the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds, about a tenth of a second faster than his time at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Lee Zerrusen filled just about every role a pitcher could have last season for the Illinois baseball team, as he started, closed and came on in long and middle relief out of the bullpen. After some early season struggles on the part of the Illini pitching staff, Zerrusen is again prepared to take on any role.

It may have just been a meaningless fall-season game when the Illinois State softball team topped Illinois behind a six-run seventh-inning rally. But when the Illini welcome the Redbirds to Eichelberger Field for their home opener Wednesday, they will remember the defeat well.
