It’s no secret that the Illini go as Demetri McCamey goes. The junior point guard leads the Illini offense, averaging 14.9 points. In Big Ten play, McCamey has scored 274 points and assisted on another 312 for 596 of Illinois’ team total 1,167 points scored. And the junior’s 6.8 assists per game is second in the nation.

The top and bottom of the Big Ten played out mostly as expected this season, with Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue leading and Penn State, Iowa and Indiana residing in the cellar. But it was the teams in the middle of the pack that defied expectations, for better and for worse. Here’s a look at how those teams did and didn’t live up to their preseason billing.

Of the three Illinois freshmen receiving significant playing time this season, guard Brandon Paul hasn’t gotten the most starts or put up the flashiest statistics down the stretch. But head coach Bruce Weber points to Paul as a key piece the Illini will be relying on in the Big Ten Tournament.

If history has any say, then there’s a 50 percent chance the Illini will be in the Big Ten Tournament championship game come Sunday. Although Illinois did just enough to clinch a first-round bye as a No. 5 seed and are entering the tournament on a 1-5 skid, the program has been known to take its conference opponents for a ride in the beginning of March.

It’s safe to say that many Big Ten coaches and players expected more than four conference teams to be locks for the NCAA Tournament by the end of the regular season. As of now, though, only Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State and Wisconsin have all but punched their tickets to the postseason, while everyone else — including Illinois — will try to salvage their seasons in the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Thursday in Indianapolis.

This being the Big Ten Tournament guide, I decided to spread the love in the form of a question-and-answer column. The questioners were nice enough to join us from all over the world, and even some beyond, so my thanks go out to

Not only is the first day on campus with a new roommate awkward enough, but keeping your dignity while changing into jammies and what you select to wear can set the tone for the rest of the year.

I love cooking. I love making dinner for my friends and sister. I love baking cakes for birthdays. I love reading cookbooks and watching the Food Network. Whenever someone travels or goes on a date, I always ask: what’d you eat? Food has always been a huge part of my family. So naturally, the kitchen is a place where I gravitate and hang out.

Let’s face it; we would simply cease to exist without the Internet. Our schoolwork and social lives depend on gigabytes and Ethernet. That’s why the thought of most freshmen as they enter the dorms for the first time is “how do I get connected?”

I scribbled a large letter “D” on the dotted line, along with a loopy version of the rest of my name, finally dating the sheet of paper and handing it over to the brightly beaming lady at the desk. I then walked away with my roommate for next year chattering excitedly about our apartment for next year.

H is for hatred. And heating, which is convenient, because I really hate heating.

Okay, maybe not heating in general (I’m not into the whole “frostbite” thing, that’s so last winter), but dealing with it is a hassle. When you have your own apartment, you usually have to pay for your heat.

Money is the main factor for many when choosing housing. Living with friends makes apartment living more cost effective. After finding roommates, choosing housing and getting ready for a new place, you have to figure out how to pay for it all.

One of the most important parts of the housing equation is something that might be a second thought— garages. Not garages alone, but more specifically, parking. Where you live greatly affects how much parking costs and how convenient it is.

When I moved back to my apartment in Urbana at the end of the summer, I wanted it to have more pizazz.

I was sure I would do a lot of cooking after moving into an apartment for the first time. After years of having food prepared for me, in the residence halls and my sorority house, not to mention by my loving parents, I was ready to be responsible and healthy.

Every summer, the advertisements begin. They show everything from shoe organizers to put in your closest to the coolest comforter to put on your bed to the most popular posters to hang on your walls.

With new businesses, buildings and apartment complexes sprouting up all the time, most University students have experienced construction and the many joys (if you can call them that) of living near it.

Roommates — it’s the subject that, unless you move to school with a plan to bunk with a friend from home, can often cause the most worry when thinking about housing.

During my four years at this University, few issues have caused as much debate as the ongoing battle over which is better: Champaign or Urbana.

Until recently I was very biased because I had only lived in Champaign. In fact, I have always lived within a few blocks of Green Street and the Main Quad. I never really understood how anyone could argue that Urbana was a better place to live.

I used to joke that a trip to Urbana was like a trip across town— there was a great deal of preparation involved and often ended with procrastination (“Eh, I’ll go next weekend.”)
